HCF Grants at Work

Those We Have Touched

Our mission is “Enriching Hudson Forever.” That means supporting organizations that contribute to the long-term success of this very special community. Our core areas of interest include: Youth Education and Recreation, Arts and Culture, Hudson Social Services and Historical and Environmental Preservation.

Most Recent Grants -

HCF awarded foundation grants to eight recipients for fall 2017. They represent more than $20,000 in investments in local Hudson community not-for-profit organizations and programs.

The following organizations and programs are receiving HCF grants in fall 2017:

  • Greenleaf Family Centers for an adolescent suicide prevention program administered through Hudson High School and Western Reserve Academy
  • Hudson City School District for support of the Drug Free Clubs of America
  • Hudson Community Chorus for its annual holiday concert on Dec. 3, 2017
  • Hudson Heritage Association for reprinting brochures on local architecture and history
  • Destination Hudson as it prepares a new community picture book
  • Destination Hudson for the “Bye Bye Barrels” event to support the reopening of Main Street
  • The Habitat for Humanity Hudson Coalition for its 26th sponsored home project
  • Hudson Special Olympics for a local recreation program.

 

Bill Wooldredge, Chairman Emeritus of the HCF and founder of the designated fund Hudson City Schools Student Endowment Fund, presented the annual  distribution to the Hudson City School Board.  This fund was created by Bill Wooldredge to provide ongoing financial support to economically disadvantaged students with specific supplementary items that may be necessary to function at school on a daily basis.

   

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2017 1st Grant Cycle

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,400 to Music from the Western Reserve to support the artist fees for the Black Squirrel Quintet performance. Music from The Western Reserve is currently in its 34th concert season providing rich cultural and educational opportunities for the Hudson community. This grant was made possible through the Tobin Fund for Culture, Arts and Preservation.

Through the Social Services Fund, HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,000 to The Salvation Army of Summit County to support the Hudson Extension Office of the Salvation Army for assistance to the needy who reside in the Hudson School District. The Hudson Extension Office is led by Hudson volunteers and provides vital services such as emergency financial assistance, food pantry, and emergency family shelter.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,000 to the Hudson City Schools – East Woods to support the purchase of a Sway Fun which is a fully-inclusive piece of playground equipment which students in wheelchairs can independently play on with their friends. This grant was made possible through the Youth, Education & Recreation Fund. The students compiled a proposal, including testimonies from several students, outlining the need for this piece of playground equipment at East Woods.  East Woods houses the fourth and fifth grade students.

Through The Youth, Education & Recreation Fund, HCF issued a grant in the amount of $3,750 to the Hudson Library and Historical Society Community to support, in partnership with Akron Children’s Hospital, the 2017 Summer Reading Program, entitled Build a Better World, for Hudson-area children and teens. This grant will be used to further the library’s comprehensive and progressive STEM-related activities and resources offered to our area’s youth and help combat the “summer slide” of learning.

 

November 2016

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,500 to Case Barlow Farm for the restoration and painting of the exterior wood siding, porches, and handicapped ramps on the restored farm house. The Case Barlow Farm is a regional model of Western Reserve life, historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Case Barlow Farm offers many programs for youth education, recreation, arts, and cultural events to the Hudson community. This grant was made possible through the Historical and Environmental fund.

Through the Historical and Environmental Preservation Fund, HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,000 to support a new venture-Next Exit History which will allow Destination Hudson to promote Hudson’s history and heritage.  Next Exit History is a smartphone app which encourages mobile users to connect with historical and cultural sites around them. This app works on both Apple and Android smartphones, providing an innovative, complete and affordable way to connect new audiences to tourism in Hudson.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $500 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society through the Hudson Social Services fund.  This grant will be used to partially support the 2017 Looking Ahead program in Summit County which provides short-term emergency assistance, equipment and home modification, respite and homemaker services, and transportation assistance modifications for individuals living with MS in Summit County that are uninsured, underinsured and unable to pay for these services.

Through the Arts and Culture fund, HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,000 for concert sponsorship during the 2016/2017 concert season. Music from the Western Reserve is in its 34th season presenting critically acclaimed chamber music concerts performed by musicians from Northeast Ohio providing audience members with an up-close and personal experience with artists and music.

September 2016

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,000 to the Hudson Community Youth Chorus to support a joint performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet with the youth of Hudson Conservatory of Ballet in November. This grant was made possible through the Youth, Education & Recreation Fund. The Hudson Community Youth chorus is open to youth in grades 3-12. This is the 2nd year of joint productions with the Hudson Conservatory of Ballet. Members of these youth ensembles receive musicianship training, experience the joy of shared musical harmony, and serve the Hudson community through concerts and public service events.

Through The Tobin Fund for Arts, Culture and Preservation fund, HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,500 to the Hudson Community Chorus for the production of John Rutter’s Magnificat in December. This grant will be used to underwrite the cost of the 17-piece orchestra needed for this production The Hudson Community Chorus is a volunteer chorus in its 29th year providing an opportunity for singers of all ages to share their love of music and perform, and for audiences to hear wonderful music locally.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,000  to Hudson City Schools Foundation/Hudson Community First for support of the 2016 Family Fun Night at Memorial Stadium/Middle School.

March 2016

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,500 to the Greenleaf Family Center for the Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program at Hudson City School District. This program provides Hudson students with the knowledge needed to seek out lifesaving resources within the community; for themselves, friends or family. This grant was made possible from The Social Services Fund.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,000 to the Music from The Western Reserve for artist fee support for the March concert: Jinjoo Cho, violin, Feature Young Artist. This grant was made possible by The Tobin Fund for Arts, Culture and Preservation Fund. For thirty-three seasons, Music from The Western Reserve has brought timeless classics performed by the region’s most talented chamber music artist to the stage.  Their concert series provides rich cultural and educational opportunities for all.

Through The Social Services Fund, HCF issued a grant of $2,000 to The Salvation Army for the Hudson Extension Office for assistance to the needy who reside in the Hudson School District. In fiscal year 2015, the Hudson Service Unit supported 31 different Hudson families with groceries, utilities payments and rent in the amount of $13,179.42.

December 2015 Grants

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $3,000 to Destination Hudson for support of ongoing operations for Destination Hudson/The Visitor Center. Destination Hudson is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Hudson’s historic core and achieves its mission to promote Hudson by educating both residents and visitors from across the country about the importance of Hudson’s historical and architectural treasures. The Visitor Center offers on-stop availability for all information about Hudson. This grant was made possible by The Historical and Environmental Preservation Fund.

Through The Youth, Education & Recreation Fund, HCF issued a grant of $1,200 to the Young Entrepreneur Institute at University School to sponsor the 2016 Lemonade Day Northeast Ohio in Hudson. Students from Seton Catholic School, East Woods Elementary, and Hudson Montessori participate in this Entrepreneurial experience of working in teams to set up lemonade stands in Hudson.  A portion of the profits is donated to charities of their choice. Important lessons such as teamwork and problem solving are learned.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $1,000 for support of the Girls on the Run Curriculum 3 for 3rd grade Hudson girls, Heart & Sole for 6th-8th grade Hudson girls and Hudson 5K.  This grant was made possible through The Youth, Education & Recreation Fund. This grant supports the physical activity- based youth development program serving girls in Hudson.

Through The Hudson Social Services Fund, Hudson Community Foundation funded a $2,000 grant to partially fund the construction of the 25th Hudson Coalition sponsored home. The Hudson Coalition partners with Habitat for Humanity of Summit County in efforts to help eliminate poverty housing and homelessness.

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $5,000 to the Town Hall Restoration Fund Project to support the ongoing operation of Hudson’s historic Town Hall building. Destination Hudson and the Hudson Fire Department Association are working together to remodel the current space into an expanded Visitor Center and a new Fire Museum. A May grand opening is anticipated.  This grant was made possible from The Historical and Environmental Preservation Fund.

 

 

HCF issued a grant in the amount of $2,500 to Greenleaf Family Center to support the Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program (ASPP) classes at Hudson High School.  The program is designed to help young people understand and recognize the signs and symptoms of depressions and provide tools for seeking assistance. This program educated over 3oo Hudson High School students in 2014.  This grant was made possible from the Hudson Community Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign.

Rich Warfield, board member of the Hudson Community Foundation presented to Nancy Dotson, President of the Music from The Western Reserve, a grant in the amount of $1,500.00 from The Arts & Culture Fund to support the artist fee for the November 8th concert: Classical and Beyond.  This grant was made possible from the Hudson Community Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign.

 Hudson Community First

HCF issued a grant in the amount of 2,500 to Hudson Community First for Take A Second Make A Difference October 2015 event.  This event recognizes students, teachers and community members who have made a positive impact on youth in the Hudson Community. The people are nominated for the difference they make in kid’s lives.  This grant was made possible from the Hudson Community Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign.

The Hudson Community Chorus

Hudson Community Foundation (HCF) issued a grant in the amount of $1,250 to The Hudson Community Chorus from the Tobin Fund for Culture, Arts and Preservation to support a joint performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nut Cracker ballet with the youth of Hudson Conservatory of Ballet.  . Heroine Awareness

Heroin Awareness

Hudson Community foundation funded $2,500 to the Keep Hudson Safe Initiative. The three-part series was created as an informational/awareness campaign here in Hudson. In April, Hudson Community First and the Community of Concern, teamed together to sponsor a resource fair. The resource fair included a panel presentation in the High School Media Center which informed parents and community members about Heroine in Hudson.

Akron Symphony

2015-05-15

Through The Arts & Culture Fund, Hudson Community Foundation funded $2,500 to the Akron Symphony. This grant supported the Concerts for Kids Program in Hudson in May 2015.

The series of concerts are aimed to provide children with an interactive musical experience. Set to the music of Ravel, the Magical Theatre Company performed fables for the parents and children.

Hudson Community Foundation (HCF) issued a grant in the amount of $2,000 to The Salvation Army Hudson Extension office. Last year, The Salvation Army assisted 24 families in Hudson for approximately $8,000 providing meals, housing and rent. The grant will be applied to the needy who reside in the Hudson City School district. The grant was made possible from the Hudson Community Foundation’s Annual Campaign. Grants are made at the discretion of the HCF Board. The Hudson Community Foundation is a nationally recognized public charity partnering with donors and their financial advisors to provide tools and strategies that maximize their tax benefits and gifts to the causes most important to them.

Mental Health America of Summit County

Hudson Community Foundation issued a grant in the amount of $2,000 to Mental Health America of Summit County to support Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program classes taught at Hudson High School.  Comprised of community volunteers dedicated to charitable solutions within Hudson, HCF is an endowment building organization that aims to preserve and enhance the quality of life for all citizens of the community. The foundation makes grants to organizations that support local youth education and recreation, arts and culture, historical and environmental preservation and social services.
